1.Write a complete bibliographic entry for the photograph you have selected.
Photographer: Dorothea Lange
Date: June 1937
Place: Leland, Mississippi, in the Delta area.
2.What is the setting of the photograph?
This photo is taken outdoors as an outside view to the colored theater. his photo seems to take place an urban area; because there aren't many places you see a movie theater in an area that rural. The lighting feels bright, it doesn't seem to bring you to far down when you look at it, and because of it looking bright it is taken during the day.
3.Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details.
In this photograph there aren't any people in this photograph, just a street with a colored theater on it. The building seems to be on a bit of an angle and to the left in the photograph is an electric company. To the right there seems to be a blocked off alley, and then of course on the building itself are the movie fliers. The thing in this photo that catches my eye first is the fact that the theater is so small compared to many that we see today.
4.What structures are in the photograph?
It looks like a business that is in an average condition. Everything in this photo seems grouped close together, for example when you normal see a movie theater its just that, but in this picture its grouped with another shop.
5.What is the tone of the photograph?
At first glance, it resembles something happy, something alive, but if you really look at the photo, and compare to prior knowledge you see that its really small. It probably can't hold as much inside, it’s segregated, its small, and with no one outside it seems like maybe it isn't as active as it appears.
6.Write a paragraph explaining your response to this question. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer.
This photograph, given the location it was placed, is meant to show signs promoting segregation during the time of the Great Depression. This theater, is one only allowing African Americans, or colored me to enter, and watch. My explanation on the question explained how the tone was at first glance rather happy, that people of a different color had a movie theater in which they could attend. However if you take time to think about the going on, the segregation it leads to, it sort of brings the happy, lively tone, down.
7.Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s).
The two questions I would ask are:
Is the theater in good conditions?
If you were to look at it from the side, is it longer in length then it is in width?
1.Write a complete bibliographic entry for the photograph you have selected.
Photographer: Jack Delano
Date: May 1940.
Place: Durham, North Carolina.
2.What is the setting of the photograph?
This photograph is taken outdoors, in the afternoon. This photo looks like it had been taken on a busy street, or even the main street of this North Carolina town.
3.Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details.
In this photo the first thing that stands out, of course, is the white women only restroom. There are three giggling women who look like they are heading to the restroom from the sidewalk. You can also tell from the photo that its rather advanced in transportation because of the automobile sitting in the corner of the picture, and the ones driving on the road. You can also see the ice cream shop, and a few other shops along the road.
4.What structures are in the photograph?
This photo show as a business that looks like it’s in a good condition for the Great Depression. The girls are laughing, the streets are filled with cars passing by, there are shops throughout the town seem to be doing good dif they are still in business. Though the separation of Black and White still is shown through that small painted sign on the door of the bathroom.
5.What is the tone of the photograph?
To me the tone of this photograph is pretty positive, if you were to block out the negativity on the door. The Great Depression wasn't a happy time. There wasn't anything to be to happy about, money was low, shops closed down, but by looking at this picture you can't really tell any of that by the expressions
6.Write a paragraph explaining your response to this question. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer.
Tone is something you can see when looking at a photograph, as the message the photographer is trying to get across, in this picture, I think Jack Delano was trying to get across the point that even though there is segregation of black vs. white, their still is happiness, and even though they are all in the Great Depression, there still is something they can learn to beat inside their country.
7.Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s).
The two questions I would ask are:
Is there another bathroom for African American women?
Did African Americans even walk that street?
1.Write a complete bibliographic entry for the photograph you have selected.
Photographer: Marion Post Wolcott,
Date: June 1939
Place: South Carolina.
2.What is the setting of the photograph?
The setting of this photo is taken outside in a rural town of South Carolina. Off to the side you see the sign the says Cabins for Colored, followed by an example of a small wooden shack type place.
3.Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details.
In this photo there are no people, the only thing you see is the sign which focuses on the cabins for rent for the colored people, and then the shack off to the side. Actually that shack is what caught my attention to this photo. When looking at the photo as a whole, I thought, and still do believe that those are the cabins that they are selling/renting to the African Americans, and it makes me rather sad.
4.What structures are in the photograph?
The photograph is more of a business that rents homes to those who needed that at the time. Of course they were for only a colored man or woman, and because of taking place in the Great Depression, I believe the renting of the homes was rather cheap.
5.What is the tone of the photograph?
The tone, to me, in this photograph is rather negative, and makes me believe, unlike the second picture I wrote about, those times during the Great Depression, were just that depressing.
6.Write a paragraph explaining your response to this question. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer.
Just like in the other pictures we had to fill out the analysis about, this picture and its reasoning in tone is no different. This picture depresses me to a certain point. The condition of the shack in this picture is sad, almost like its going to crumble. There are signs hanging on it, the paint is falling off and of course the forest/woods around it is rather intimidating to anyone looking to rent the cabin in the first place.
7.Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s).
The two questions I would ask are:
Is that shack really the cabin in which the African Americans would rent?
If they are, how much would they pay for something in such a condition? -By Danielle M.
1.Write a complete bibliographic entry for the photograph you have selected.
Photographer: Russell Lee Date: July 1939 Place: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
2.What is the setting of the photograph?
The setting of this photo is taken inside in the town of Oklamhoma City.
3.Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details.
In this photo there is a African American male taking a drink of water. By the water fountain you see a sign that says "colored' meaning only colored people can drink from it. One thing that really stands out to me is the "white men colored women" signs. I wonder what it means.
4.What structures are in the photograph?
The photograph contains a man with a water fountain. Around him are walls from a building of some sort.
5.What is the tone of the photograph?
To me, the tone is negative or excluesive because of the speration of color in the photo. For example, the water fountain marked "colored" meaning its only a fountain for African Americans.
6.Write a paragraph explaining your response to this question. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer. This picture was taken by Russell Lee in July of 1939. It was taken in Oklahoma City, Oklahome during the daytime. In the picture is a African American man taking a drink from the colored water fountain. This shows how far people took it to seperate whites from blacks. The tone seems to be negative because of how far people go to seperate people of different skin color.
7.Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s). Two question i would ask are:
1) Where is the man? In a building?
2)Where are the white water fountains located?

3.Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details.
There are not any people in this photograph. All you can see is a sign which says "colored waiting room" with an arrow pointing towards a building. The angle of the camera is very odd because of the way it is pointing up at the sign and not straight at it. In this photograph you also see another building next to the colored waiting room building.
4.What structures are in the photograph?
It looks like a a town were everything is very close together. From this view the urban town looks nice and not very old and run-down.
5.What is the tone of the photograph?
At first, it looked sad to me. It looked sad because of the seperation of people. But at second glance, it doesnt look all that bad. As you look at the bright sky and clouds it makes the photo seem more happy, and not as upsetting.
6.Write a paragraph explaining your response to this question. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer.
This photograph was taken by Esther Bubley in September of 1943. It was taken in an outdoor setting in Rome, Georgia in what looks like a urban town. 4.What structures are in the photograph?
In the photo there is a Billiards building and a car.
5.What is the tone of the photograph?
The tone of the photo is exciting. It looks like all the people waiting outside the building are excited for somthing. Maybe even a parade is going on.
6.Write a paragraph explaining your response to this question. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer.
This photo was taken by Marion Post Wolcott in October of 1939. The picture was taken in Memphis Tennessee on a bright day. The photo focuses on the Billiards hall for Colored. The area the builing is in looks urban because of the buildings and paved road with vehicles. In the picture are many African American men where they look to be waiting for somthing.
